About Mike Crisolago

Journalist

Currently, I am the Associate editor of Zoomer magazine. In the past I have worked as an editor, reporter and/or photographer for a number of Toronto-based online and print publications including Zoomermag.com, 50 Plus.comQuill & Quire, Canadian Family, Toronto Today, The East Toronto Observer, The Toronto Observer and the Centennial College Courier.

My work has been recognized by The New Yorker and Apartment Therapy, among other publications and I was recently nominated for a Canadian Online Publishing Award (COPA) for my piece on 20 Books Every Tween/Teen Should Read Before They’re 16 for Canadian Family online.

In 2009 I co-founded, reported for and edited a local news website called NewFIX.ca, which received recognition for its content by editors of The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, The National Post and the CBC. As well, its readership extends throughout Canada, the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Botswana and Afghanistan.

Academically, I am the recipient of the 2010 Dean’s Award for highest achievement in journalism and the Best Guest Interviewer Award 2009 for my interview with pop legend Dan Hill.

Photographer

I work as the image library photographer for an international web hosting company. My online portfolio, however, is dedicated mostly to my personal photography-related projects/goals.

My photos have appeared in publications such as Canadian Family, Toronto Today, The East Toronto Observer, The Toronto Observer and others.

Feel free to check out my updated and expanded portfolio of photographic works HERE.

Writer

I started writing fiction at 10 years old and never looked back. While I love writing short stories and poetry, my favourite venue for creative writing is the theatre.

As a writer/director/producer (and sometimes “actor”), I have so far staged seven productions in various venues throughout Toronto. Four of the productions earned multiple awards at the Sears Ontario Drama Festival. My most recent production, The Lives of Moths, raised over $1000 for a local mental health charity.

    Hey April,

Thanks for the very sweet words. I was just checking out your blog and you have some really cool shots.

I think what your doing is one of the best ways to start: just buy a camera and start shooting. When you have time, take a photography course or pick up a book or some magazines on the subject to learn more about the mechanics and different techniques involved. I learned in journalism school and I took the great base I was given and started practicing on my own. However, everyone learns their own way so I wish you the best and always make sure you’re having fun with it! Your photos look great! You have a good eye — I especially liked the one with the plank of wood with the nail in it.

Thanks again for the kind words!

    Mike
